As we prepare for our reunion many alumni have commented on those who have passed on much too early.  This is the place where we can post your memories, photos or thoughts about those people.  Please email us and we will gladly upload your contributions.

Jeff 'Boomer' Korobka
Jeff "Boomer" Korobka
I first met Jeff in grade 3 at Ancaster Memorial. It was hard at that age to transfer schools from Hillfield Strathallen, and he was one of the first kids in the class to introduce himself to me. I suppose that is why he was always a great friend in my eyes.  I guess back then, as always, I thought of him as a big teddy-bear with a bigger heart. Our paths in life crossed a couple of times after high school. He even tracked me down when I was at university in London, and he was in college there, so we met for drinks and to talk about Ancaster and how we loved growing up in a small town. I was both shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. I read what Steve Ross wrote about him on another web-site, and felt he was memorialized by Steve's words appropriately. He was the type of guy who had a smile on his face, and you could not help but love.  (Jen Douglas)

I met Jeff in Grade 7 Art Class when I first moved to Ancaster from Hamilton. He looked intimidating to me at first because of his size. But it didn't take long for me to realize that I was mistaken. After 3 days of complete silence, he began teasing me with a nick-name he had come up with: S-B enage (spy, rhymes with my last name). I remember him constantly saying, "Mr. Bill, Mr. Bill" in a very high voice to make us all laugh! And we did!  Again and again he kept us laughing over all the time that we were fortunate to know him!!  During one party in highschool, Julie Edwards and I decided to invite him to come back with us because no gathering was the same without him. He led us in and so gracefully asked us to sit down and make ourselves at home. We noticed all the family photos and care he took in making sure we were comfortable while we waited for him. He was a true host and we had just spontaneously arrived. I will always remember him like it was yesterday.
He was true gentlemen.

 Sincerely,

Susan Pengelly 1967-1995

I've been contacted by Susan's parents asking that we include "Sue" in our website.  I was pleased that they contacted me because she was one of "Loyal Royals" who I thought about when I created this page.  They had asked me to write a fitting tribute.  I was ready to do so even though Sue and I didn't know each other very well.  However, when I read what her family had written to me about Sue, there was no way that I could do any better.  Those of you who knew Sue, will agree that what her family wrote about her was so true.  Thanks, Barry, Frances and Catherine!

Susan had an energy & zest for life that was so infectious.  She lived for the moment.  She was dearly loved by all with whom she came in contact.
In pushing herself to achieve, she often made those around her do more than they had planned. She was not put off by challenges but met them head on.  She was very independent.
She cared deeply for the environment.  The orca was her favourite animal. To her it represented a free spirit.

Susan completed her degree at Guelph and spent the summer at our then home on Pender Island saving up for a holiday in Europe.  She moved to BC for good in 1993.  Susan got an honours degree in Kinetics - she really wanted to be a vet but had to change plans.
While in Victoria, Susan was in advertising for one of the local magazines "Boulevard".  As well as this job she worked for a time as a volunteer with autistic and other physically impaired children at the Recreation Centre (landing a part time job there), worked on the advertising and other duties in a local pub "Christies" and worked in a gym.  Besides all this she sailed each weekend with a sailing group and also took up scuba diving.  Sue had always loved anything to do with the sea and marine life and was most at home in the water.  Having just completed her scuba diving certificate she wanted to do the advanced course - she always wanted things done yesterday!  It was during a beautiful sunny day in March 1995 that she spent what was to her (and she said so according to her friend Brooke who was taking the course with her) "the best day of my life" that the accident happened.  She was two weeks from her 28th birthday. She suffered an air embolism after running out of air and they did not find her body until a week later.  One does not expect to lose one's children before ourselves, but perhaps the comforting thing is that she was doing what she loved best on her last day on this earth.  There was a wonderful memorial service for her on Pender Island where many of her friends from Guelph came - the church was packed with young people - a wonderful sight.   She had made many friends here in Victoria too and all their love and support was memorable and heart warming.

How can one explain Susan?  She was full of energy and life and seemed to cram as much as possible into her time on earth.  She made a lot of friends, some of whom we are still in touch with, which is very heartening.  She worked for a time in the Gryphons lounge and bar during her time at Guelph.
Often when she came home for weekends from university she would put her washing in the machine whirl through it all and then would leave again or she would spend the time visiting other friends in the vicinity.  She very much enjoyed working with the physically impaired children - one of the mothers wrote a beautiful letter to us after Sue died.  She had a fantastic rapport with the children.

We know that Susan would have loved to attend this coming Reunion.  In fact we are sure that she would have recognized many of the faces in the pictures of the 2003 Reunion.  There were a few we recognized ourselves.  Please circle her memory with all her classmates and friends.  She will certainly be there with you all in spirit.

On her grave in Pender Island cemetery the stone reads "Life is a song, love is the music".
